Wolf Pack Hierarchy
Alpha: Alphas are the most dominant and respected wolves of the pack. If the two Alphas often one male and one female, are not given the respect they deserve, they will demand it, and if it comes to fighting, so be it, for disrespect will NOT be tolerated. Also if the Alphas see that another wolf is not getting the respect they deserve, such as the Beta then they will see to it they do get that respect. The Alphas always keep up with what is going on in the pack, even other packs. They keep up with the structure of every pack within their own range and tend to form bonds according to strength. Alphas have the final say in ALL decisions it is their duty to do what is good for the pack. Even in their own personal decisions it is always pack first. This includes hearing opinions of the others, weighing them and then making choices. They decide on the hunting, mating, exploring and other ritualistic behavior. The female Alpha is in charge of the females and the male is in charge of the males but all pack members regardless of age, gender, or even if they are of another pack will give them complete respect at all times.
Beta: The Betas in the wolf pack take on a very similar role to the Alphas. Beta's are looked upon as second in command taking over when the Alphas are not present. They are able to make the same decisions and have the same amount of respect as the Alphas. They answer to no one but their Alphas and while the Alphas are present they settle the minor disputes and take on the minor jobs of the pack. [The position of Beta can not be challenged for. It is a granted position to those the ALPHA trusts the most. However.. two opposing Beta's may challenge for sole claim of the title.]
Elders: The Elders of the pack are usually the oldest and wisest, the most experienced wolves in the pack. The Elders are usually the wolves in the pack that have the ability to be high ranking. They are constantly looking for advice even by the Alphas and the Betas. They are highly respected and they usually know the entire pack history and are the storytellers. Their job is to keep up with current events, collect information and store it in a safe place so that their history never dies. They are the heart of the pack.
Guardians: The Guardians are a larger group, consisting of a few wolves whose job it is to watch over the clearings and the woodland as a whole. They are usually bigger, and stronger and the more loyal wolves to the pack. There job is to greet visitors as well as chase away any threats.
Hunters: The hunters are very similar to the Guardians. Being some of the largest and strongest of the pack they are in charge of hunting for and bringing back food for the entire pack. Usually they will take with them other members of the pack acting as mentors and teaching them to hunt as well. They are in charge of keeping the pack alive and healthy.
Shamans: A wolf that shows skill and interest in caring for the injured or weak members of the pack. They also watch over the older or ill wolves. They serve as the doctors and ensure that no pack member overexerts themselves before or after the hunt.
Scouts: Scouts are responsible for warning the pack of any dangerous territory outside of their home. Scouts are usually known well by neighboring packs and travel about often. They stay in touch with other packs and keep friendly relations, somewhat the ambassadors of the pack. They are to report any new changes to the Alphas and Betas, if a new pack is formed, they are to find out who the Alphas and Betas are in the other packs and if they are peaceful. Another duty is to find out if any were banished from other packs and why so that they know the danger of accepting them into their own.
Pack Members: Not all wolves hold positions, either for being new additions or not having defined their abilities. The Alphas take great care in deciding who will be awarded a position to be maintained. As they members develop their abilities then it will be decided if any are strong enough to lead in any capacity.
Omegas: The Omega of the pack is the lowest ranking wolf, only above the pups. The Omega is either very new to pack life or has been lowered in rank due to wrong actions. They are usually given responsibilities of 'pup sitter' watching over the young during group hunts to be sure they do not wander off into the forest.
Pups: Normally only the Alphas and Betas of the pack will mate and produce pups. Some packs even adopt pups that happen to wonder into the territory. Usually they are accepted only if they are very young and have lost their parents due to fights or other natural disasters. Pups are not allowed to go on hunts until they are at least 6 months of age [in wolf form] and then they are still always accompanied by an adult.
Assessments: Assessments are often wolves that have wondered into a territory looking for a home. These wolves must prove themselves worthy of becoming part of the pack through an initiation of sorts. Each pack has its own requirements for being accepted.
Sister Packs: Some packs will claim another pack as part of their extended family. Each is a separate pack guided by their own Alphas or Betas but upon one another's land the rule of the territory owning Alphas and Betas is law. These packs will come together when in danger and help to defend one another against enemies. The Alphas and Betas are given respect befitting their position when visiting.
